After a 25-year career in academia as a writer, teacher and researcher, I am in the process of transitioning to working as a full-time artist. Even in my academic work, I’ve always been drawn to exploring the ways in which art is able to communicate complicated ideas and theories. What is art? What can it do? What can’t it do?
I tend to be drawn to design rather than “fine art.” I like work that’s created in the space between or just after tumultuous historical eras. I think it’s interesting to see how artists metabolize what has just happened, and how they incorporate current events into their work. Right now I’m particularly inspired by the work of the Wiener Werkstätte - Maria Likarz, Mathilde Flögl, Mela Koehler, Josef Hoffmann, Gustav Klimt. Honestly, I can look at any kind of design all day long.
I’ve only recently started creating surface design. Some adjectives I’d use to describe my work are: complex, hand-made, purposefully imperfect, active, large-scale, nature-based, organic, and surprising. Take a look at my work, and contact me with any questions or collaborations!
